Among Southern brahmins who do panchayatana at their homes, many have
included a 'vel' (shaktyaayudha) made of silver or brass in the set of five
deities. This is to represent Skanda. The special bhakti to Skanda among
Tamil Smartas is because of very popular Tamil works like Thiiruppugazh,
Skanda Shasthi kavacham, and many more which hold Skanda to be Parabrahman.
Skanda is a popular deity of the Tamil Sangam era, early 1st - 5th
Centuries CE.. Temples like Pazhani, Tiruttani, etc. six of them are in TN.
There is a strong belief that Skanda is Vishnu's nephew being son of His
sister Parvathy.
