It is a well-known fact that purana-s are subject to extrapolations or additions of new stuff to uphold the traditional beliefs and eulogies one deity's superiority over other.  What some purana-s have been accepted as authentic in one tradition, the same purana is subject to scrutiny in another tradition.  vAyu purANa, padma purANa etc. are some of those purANa-s which have been carrying drastic textual differences across different traditions.  Some of those fabricated purana-s have the verses to belittle the acharya of rival tradition.  Giving too much importance & credibility to these texts should be avoided I think.
