Here is one instance where the worship of the Shiva Linga is extolled in
the Mahabharata: Here just a few verses are given; one can read the entire
discussion in this link:

Knowing Bhava to be of universal form,
   whoever worships the Lord in the Shiva Linga, all means for his supreme
   upliftment will be blessed to him.]
Thus the Deva-s,
   siddha-s, and the great Rishis, worship and pray for the supreme, eternal
   status.]
This Krishna, devotee of Rudra, Keshava, the
   ancient, born of Rudra, has to be worshiped through sacrifices.]
   वृषभध्वजः ||९०||
      [The Lord Shiva, Rishabha vahana, will bestow supreme love on those
      who worship him in the Linga with the
         realization that He is the All.]
         Om Tat Sat
