Sri Ajit,
My point was exactly that - what can *we* do to help. I wasn't suggesting
palming the problem off to someone else.

I didn't have the opportunity to do adhyayana as a child, so I'm currently
doing the adhyayana of taittiriya shakha under the tutelage of my guru and
with the blessings of gayatri mata, intend to have my son join once his
upanayanam is completed. However, that in itself doesn't solve the problem.

I understand that there is a sastraic sanction against adhyayana of another
shakha before completing the adhyayana of sva-shakha. To the extent we are
talking of an endangered shakha, you are not going to find students of that
shakha that easily. Therefore, it will have to be someone else who has
completed sva-shakha adhyayana - this person would have already devoted
between 10-15 years of their life for that.

In my case, I have a laukika job, so I am doing it part time, so its
certainly going to take longer for me. To spend another 10-15 years to
learn another shakha after I have completed this seems a long way off. To
expect someone else to do it full time for 30 years before they can start
earning seems a very unreasonable ask.

Is there a sastraic exception to this rule, in the case of endangered
shakhas?

As Sri Venkatesh says, asking someone to send their son to a remote village
purely for the sake of reviving a shakha seems unfair - in my view and
personal experience, its better to start off with something which is a
half-way house than have everything exactly perfect. Otherwise people would
have no incentive / interest to even begin. Once people start getting into
it, their involvement would automatically increase to a level which is
desirable.

It seems to me that tracking the holders of these shakhas and persuading
them to teach students at other veda pathashalas / maths (and sponsoring
them to do so), and at the same time, working with veda pathashalas and
maths to find qualified students willing to learn (and sponsoring them to
do so) may be a way forward.

Regards,

Venkat
