Just a nitpick here.  Maharshi Vedavyasa was indeed a Brahman, the son of
the Maharshi Parashara.  It was his son Shukadeva who is considered not a
Brahman having never gone through Yagnopavit etc.  This is all told in the
Bhagavata Purana.
