The lakshana that the Advaitin resorts to is not the ajahallakshana
exemplified by the above example of Ganga. On the other hand it is the
jahadajahallakshana of the type 'so'yam devadattaḥ' where there is no
signifying any 'related' object like the gangātīra.. It is akhandarthata
where the very same 'vyaktimātra' Devadatta is involved, only with the
incidentals like the place, time, apparel etc. disregarded. Here is an
excerpt from the Panchapadika on the topic:

The question 'Who is chandra?' and the answer to that in the Advaitic
context is stated here in the Panchapadika:

अथ केयं सम्यक्ताऽन्वयस्य ? पदानां परस्परानवच्छिन्नार्थानामनन्याकाङ्क्षाणा
मव्यतिरिक्तैकरसप्रातिपदिकार्थमात्रान्वयः ; ‘सोऽयमि’त्यादि वाक्यस्थपदानामिव
। प्रकृष्टप्रकाशशब्दयोरिव चन्द्रपदाभिधेयार्थकथनेन । तथा च व्यक्तिविशेषः,
कश्चिच्चन्द्रप्रातिपदिकाभिधेयः केनचित् पृष्टः ‘अस्मिन् ज्योतिर्मण्डले
कश्चन्द्रो नाम ? ’ इति तस्य प्रतिवचनं ‘प्रकृष्टप्रकाशश्चन्द्रः’ इति । तदेवं
प्रतिवचनं भवति यदि यथा चन्द्रपदेनोक्तं, तथाऽऽभ्यामपि पदाभ्यामुच्येत । एवं च
सति नीलोत्पलवदयुतसिद्धपरस्परावच्छि-न्नविशेषणविशेष्यभावेनाप्यन्वयो दुर्लभः ।
