There are many prayoga texts which outline the panchayatana placements for
all five variations, but provide the prayoga for the Vishnu panchayatana
puja. It's clear that none of the variations are superior / inferior, and
we should continue the family tradition.

Though this is indeed what the Shiva purana states, the very existence of
the panchayatana pooja with amorphous stones for all the devatas shows
otherwise. The Mudgala purana also states that Ganesha has both aspects.
