That is what happens when one mixes up the audiences of all levels. The "adhikar"  principle does apply in debate. One, treating Lord Vishnu and Lord Shiva as a Vedic deity,  is at the level of Veda and not of Vedanta.

As you know, Vaishnavas argue Lord Vishnu is Supreme and Saivites argue Lord Siva is. Madhusudana had to clarify oneness.
