I am just a bit curious about what he meant by these terms. Oriental = those who
have stayed close to their roots, and modernised = westernized?

Don't go completely by Wikipedia articles on these details. The writer probably
meant Vaishnava, but even so, he or she wouldn't be quite right about it.
