A simple answer without going into elaborate discussion, since you asked.
Because the direct statement contradicts advaita state of turiiyam of Mandukya and other mahaavaakyas of the Upanishads that state jiiva jagat Iswara aikyam in moksha. Sankhya and yoga philosophies subscribe to plurality of jiivas in moksha too. Hence the upanishad statements have to be properly interpreted for samanvayam or consistency - tatttu samanvayaat.
