How about these references to pitryana in the Upanishads? Do these tell us
something?

Brhadaranyaka Upanishad - 6.2.16
Chandogya Upanishad - 5.10.3-5
Prashna Upanishad - 1.9
Kaushitaki Brahmana Upanishad - 1.1-2
